Proper Exposure and Lighting

The importance of proper exposure and lighting cannot be ignored when trying to illustrate ideas through photographic images.  A poorly lit or exposed image is a poorly expressed idea and will not be effective in communicating the intended thought or concept. The following images show how lighting can be used to improve an image's ability to communicate by including more detail and thus more information.  In the first pair of photographs on the left, an off-camera light was used to illuminate the portion of the brick wall that had been in the shadow.  In the photograph on the right, an on-camera light was used to provide interior illumination to match the outside lighting conditions.
