Documenting Materials and ConditionsThe main function of photography for the forensic engineer is to document the condition of the scene, components, or materials of interest at the time of inspection. The knowledgeable use of the proper equipment can make the difference in preserving a usable photographic record for trial.
Close-up and Macro Photography
Close-up and macro focusing lenses can be used to capture the fine detail of the subject. This is useful in documenting the condition of a fracture face, the filament in an automobile's light, or a blown fuse as the photograph illustrates.
Flash and Metering Controls
The use of on- and off-camera flash can provide proper exposure and balance of the interior and exterior portions of the shot. Most compact digital cameras lack the ability to provide external flash control and are unable to compensate for extreme variations in lighting. All photographs used as examples were either taken specifically for use on this web site or were used with written permission of the client. |
